Pedal the Cause Presents its Largest-Ever Donation
to Siteman Cancer Center and St. Louis Children’s Hospital

Pedal the Cause presented its largest-ever donation — $2.76 million — to Siteman Cancer Center and St. Louis Children’s Hospital at the Pedal the Cause 2014 Check Presentation Celebration held last night at Ballpark Village. Pedal the Cause is the only St. Louis event that gives 100% of participant donationsto Siteman Cancer Center and St. Louis Children’s Hospital to accelerate lifesaving cancer research. After only five events, Pedal the Cause has donated an astounding $9.36 million to advance groundbreaking cancer research.

“Pedal the Cause has seen extraordinary growth in five years,” said Jay Indovino, executive director of Pedal the Cause. “It’s truly a testament to the remarkable support of our sponsors allowing us to host a first-class event and all the Pedal the Cause participants who are determined to find a cure for cancer.”

While Pedal the Cause was an outstanding experience for the 4,000 people who participated in the weekend of activities held on Sept. 27 and 28 in downtown St. Louis, it was also extremely personal. With one in two men and one in three women developing cancer in their lifetime, Pedal the Cause participants have millions of reasons to ride and raise funds to advance research.

Pedal the Cause’s generous sponsors, led by Edward Jones, ensure that one hundred percent of the donations that participants raise go directly to advancing cancer research in hopes of finding a cure for cancer — all cancers, for everyone.

Where does the money go?
One hundred percent of the funds raised by participants pass through Pedal the Cause and go directly to advancing a variety of cancer research projects at Siteman Cancer Center and St. Louis Children’s Hospital.

“With government research dollars stretched thin, the majority of what gets funded at the national level are projects that are well established – projects that don’t take the risks that may be associated with new ideas,” said Ravi Uppaluri, M.D., Ph.D., Associate Professor of Otolaryngology and Surgical Oncologist at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. “Funds from Pedal the Cause fill this void, supporting the newest and most innovative projects that are not yet eligible for federal funding.”

Funds from Pedal the Cause kick start new, ground-breaking projects — allowing the world’s leading researchers at Siteman Cancer Center and St. Louis Children’s Hospital to produce data, procure additional funding, and put new treatments to work right away.
“Basically, Pedal the Cause makes the impossible possible,” said Dr. Uppaluri

Funds generated from Pedal the Cause 2014 will be distributed to the most promising research projects in early 2015.
